To set a MIDI note to instead mean a quarter note rather than a pitch, click on the grayed-out red button to the right of the "Quarter note" entry in the list. Note Input tab of Preferences window in MuseScore 3.3.4. In the bottom section of the Note-Input tab of the preferences window, there is a section called "MIDI Remote Control" click the checkbox next to the section heading to enable remote control. To do this, go to the menu item MuseScore→Preferences→Note Input tab. Instead of typing rhythms on the computer keyboard, you can also assign specific notes on the MIDI keyboard to rhythmic values. 5 = quarter note, and then each number above doubles the duration (6=half note, etc.), and each number less is 1/2 of the previous number (4 = eighth note, etc). Rhythms must be entered first before pressing notes on the computer keyboard. ![]() The main advantage of using a MIDI keyboard for pitches is that you can enter chords more efficiently. Using a MIDI keyboard in note-input mode is very similar to the computer keyboard entry method done in the previous lab, except that the MIDI keyboard is used to enter pitches, while the computer keyboard is used to enter rhythms. MuseScore's default note input mode allows you to enter music notation one note (or rest) at a time. There are three methods of note input via a MIDI keyboard in MuseScore: simple-time input, real-time automatic, and real-time manual. If you already have MuseScore open, then you probably have to click on the Perference->I/O->Restart Audio and MIDI Devices button to get MuseScore to reacquire the MIDI keyboard. If so, then unplug them from the USB cable and plug them back in to power-cycle them. Sometimes the O2 MIDI controllers are not responsive. In any case, I do remember that it was intuitive, and when I switched to Musescore, I was incredibly perplexed as to why this couldn't be done.Įither way, having no option but to enter notes sequentially, left to right, really only makes sense if the programmers expect that everyone is only working with finished compositions.I/O tab of Preferences window in MuseScore 3.3.4, showing the Q49 MIDI keyboard is being used for MIDI input. I'm almost certain you could still add the eighth rest at the beginning, but I don't remember if the final eight note got deleted, was pushed into the next measure, or was pushed into a no-man's-land awaiting further instructions. What I can't recall is what would happen if you already had 8 eight notes in the measure. If you had 5 eighth notes in a measure of 4/4, and you decided that the first of those notes should fall on the "and" instead of on beat one, you could select an eighth rest, place it at the beginning, and everything would shift over. Years ago I used Finale, and I can't remember exactly how it solved this problem (if somebody knows, please inform), but I am certain you could add notes and rests before existing ones. Or maybe it would be something that we'd have to enter another mode to do, or something we could select in preferences. Perhaps, for example, selecting a note and pressing delete or backspace would replace it with a rest, whereas selecting the note and pressing shift + delete would delete the note and shift everything in that measure backward. But there are other ways to solve this problem. You're correct that I wouldn't want to shift 60 bars at a time.
